What are clear aligners?
Clear aligners, also known as Invisalign, are a metal bracket-free way to straighten your teeth. They allow you to achieve straight teeth without the need for metal and other visible apparatus. Most people won't even know you're wearing the trays.
How do clear aligners compare to traditional braces?
With traditional braces, usually, you start young and there may be several phases involved. There are stories about braces cutting your gums, food getting stuck, and the soreness from tightening. Clear aligners have small tags on the outside, and you can remove the trays when eating. It's crucial to put them back in, but they offer a more aesthetic and hopefully less painful way to straighten teeth.
Are clear aligners really faster than traditional braces?
In many cases, yes. Some cases require longer than a year, but I've never heard of anyone needing braces for less than a year. Typically, traditional braces are needed for two to six years, or even longer.
Why are clear aligners considered more comfortable than braces?
Traditional braces involve metal brackets on each tooth with a wire running through them. These brackets have sharp edges that can irritate your lips, especially when chewing or eating. Chewing gum is not an option with traditional braces. Clear aligners, on the other hand, are soft trays. You remove them to eat, eliminating the discomfort from metal brackets, and you can sleep in them as well.
How long do clear aligners take to straighten your teeth?
Each case is different. I've handled cases lasting six months and others lasting a year. At Hall Family Dentistry, treatment typically ranges from six to twelve months, depending on the severity.
What is the process involved in clear aligner treatment?
The first step is a consultation to assess your needs and goals. Next, we'll discuss the process of clear aligners and how to wear them. You need to wear them at least 20 hours a day. We'll take pictures and scan your mouth to show you your current status and the projected outcome in six months.
What are clear aligner trays and how many will I need?
Clear aligner trays are clear plastic pieces with no sharp edges. You pop them in, and they fit your mouth. There are small, tooth-colored tags on the outside of your teeth that are barely visible. The trays sit on these tags, covering top and bottom teeth.
Do I sleep with my clear aligner trays?
Yes, you should wear them at night. It's a common misconception that you can take a break at night, but nighttime is one of the most important times to wear them. Ensure you wear them every night.
Is there anything that could disqualify me from using clear aligners?
Yes, certain conditions like extreme jaw positions or multiple missing teeth may make traditional braces a better option for a long-term prognosis. Clear aligners may not be suitable for such cases.
Can clear aligners fix crossbites?
Yes, they can help with crossbites, but the success rate isn't as high as with traditional braces. For a lasting solution, traditional braces are often recommended for crossbites.
Are clear aligners painful?
Pain varies by individual. Women often report less pain, while men may report more. However, compared to traditional braces, clear aligners typically cause much less pain.
Does most dental insurance cover the cost of clear aligners?
Unfortunately, no. Some plans offer orthodontic coverage, but usually only up to age 18. If you're considering clear aligners, check if your plan includes orthodontic coverage.
How much do clear aligners cost without insurance?
At our office, the flat rate is just under $5,000. This includes post-treatment adjustments if needed. If you want additional alignment improvements, you can continue with the trays at no extra charge.
