Restorative dentistry is when you have decay in a tooth. You take the decay out and restore that tooth back to its normal function. There can be multiple ways that a tooth can be restored, each option is catered to each patient and depends on the severity of the tooth.
What is the difference between restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry?
Restorative dentistry almost goes hand in hand with cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry focuses more on how a patient views their smile and their teeth up front. Restorative dentistry aids cosmetic dentistry in achieving the final aesthetic product.
What conditions would require restorative dentistry?
Whenever a tooth develops a cavity deep enough to require removal because it's reaching the second layer, restorative dentistry comes into play. You have preventative dentistry and restorative dentistry. Preventative dentistry prevents cavities, while restorative dentistry restores the tooth after you get a cavity.
Is anesthesia or sedation used during dental restorative procedures?
Yes, it is. It's very common to have a couple of different types of sedative options. We offer nitrous, which is a gas. You turn it on throughout the procedure, and you can drive home by yourself afterward.
Another option is a pill. You would need a driver to bring you in and take you home. With the pill, you'll essentially not remember anything and then wake up back at home.
What are the benefits of restorative dentistry?
Restorative dentistry allows you to keep your teeth and function normally. When considering the long term, being with your teeth your whole life, restorative dentistry is what really allows you to keep those teeth healthy for the future.
Are there risks associated with restorative dental procedures?
Yes, there are. Just like with any procedure you do in the office, whether it be a cleaning, extracting a tooth, or restorative dentistry, anytime you have something worked on, there's always a risk that the tooth could fail or something else may be needed.
How long does it take to recover from restorative dental procedures?
I like to tell patients that everybody is different. You can't give a definite time for healing afterward because people wear out the anesthetic at different rates, and pain tolerance varies. I advise gauging it based on your history and also what your family has experienced in the past.
What is the success rate with restorative dental procedures?
I associate the success of restorative dental procedures with the commitment of the patients. If you're coming in, getting regular cleanings, fluoride, and doing everything right, the success of the restorative procedures is much higher. If we did something and didn't see you for a year, we might have a different discussion at that point.
How can I schedule a dental appointment to restore my dental teeth and health?
Anytime you're ready, give our office a call. We'd love to see you. We'll start with an exam and x-rays to see where you're at. Then I'll come in to discuss where you want to be. If you want to get everything done today, we'll do as much as we can.
